We are so happy that the mural turned out perfect! We couldn’t have asked for anything better! We just want to thank the Polaris community for all the support. We really really appreciate it and without you guys the mural could not have happened. Have a great summer!!! BYEEE!!!

Our original plan was to announce the car wash raffle winner on Monday but we decided to announce the winner on Tuesday. It will give us more time if people want to buy a raffle ticket. We then took the envelope and Becca slipped her hand into the envelope, closed her eyes and then pulled out a single pink square shaped paper that read Nurse Patty with her name and number scribbled down onto the fluorescent paper. After we saw that she won we quickly walked to her office and gave her the two free car washes. She was so excited and thankful. We made a total of $7 off this raffle.
Bella called PIP printing on Friday after to figure out the progress of the mural and to find out what day it would be done. The nice lady named Amy told us that PIP was planning to come into Polaris on Tuesday at 1 o’clock to help us put up our mural. We are hoping everything will go well while putting the mural up. After the mural is put up we will have our friend Maisha paint in cursive our mural tittle. We hope we will be done witht eh mural by the end of the day. After the mural is all done and dry we will place a big sheet of paper and cover up the mural for our grand opening on the last day of school tomorrow (Wednesday.) As far as fundraising we are all done. Bellas and Beccas parents both paid $100 towards the mural, the yearbook paid $100 and the rest of the money we fundraised. Fundraising was relatively easy thanks to all of our supporters and sponsors. The PIP people came and it was a great experience. They were super kind and supportive! They even let us try putting on the sticker! They thought what we were doing was super cool and that we had a great idea. The mural putting up process took us approximately 14 minutes and went by real quick. Right now the mural is all covered up and Maisha just finished painting on the title. We had her write the title in cursive with black paint. We are revealing it tomorrow at 9 am. We are super excited to share our mural with the school and show them what the finished product looks like after 3 weeks of hard work to complete our mural. The bake sale was a bigger success than we thought and we got a pretty good profit of over $80 dollars. We had cupcakes, donut holes, sugar cookies and chocolate chip cookies that we sold all under 2 dollars each.
The raffle for the two free car washes on the other hand was a whole different story. We decided that the entry cost of the raffle would be one dollar for one ticket. Once they payed we would give them a ticket and they would put their name and phone number so we could call on Monday if they won. So on Monday 5/22 we are borrowing a raffle ticket wheel from parent forum to select the random winner. We are hoping over the weekend that more people will purchase a raffle ticket from us because only three people from school bought a raffle ticket. Also since Becca is gone in Washington for the next couple of days Bella is going to call PIP printing to see what time we could set up an appointment on Tuesday. We are hoping that it could be on Tuesday afternoon because then we will have the whole day on Monday to announce the winner of the raffle, collect all the money for printing, get the cover for the mural for big reveal, figure out how we want to do the title, start blog #7 and take some more pictures for mural process. We decided we wanted the title of the mural off to the right side of the mural. We wanted to use a light blue as a background and then do cursive black handwriting saying “The Face of Polaris” by Bella and Becca Spring 2017. We need to start working on this right away on Monday because we need everything done for our big reveal on Wednesday. The support from our parents, the Polaris community and PIP has been immensely appreciated from both of us and we are so very glad you could help us make this happen. We are making thank you cards to the specific people that have really helped us. We are very excited that the small dream of making a mural in January is finally becoming a reality. Tomorrow Becca is leaving to go to Washington and she doesn’t get back till Monday. We are rushing to order the mural at PIP and are about to finalize our fundraising plans! We are so excited to see the final mural project! We are heading to PIP in about one hour to give them our flash drive with the mural file on it. Once they have the mural file they will begin printing the mural. We will order the mural with adhesive on the back. It will be like a huge sticker and then on Monday or Tuesday the PIP people will come to Polaris and put the mural up on the wall. Before we printed our mural we had to finalize our program we were going to use. As I said in BLOG POST NUMBER FOUR, we tried out three different programs. In this blog post we will show you each program we used and this will show you why we choose Mosaically in the end. The first program we tried was called PICTURE MOSAIC. This program was pretty good and loaded very fast for us. When it was done loading all the pictures the mosaic looked like this: The second program we used was Zumyn. With this program we did the mosaic manually. As if we used photo shop or a program that did not put the pictures together for us. For us this was a bit of a challenge. But we are strong and can take any challenge! Right? Anyways because of this it took us a long time to complete this copy of our mural. The final copy looked like this: The last program we tried was Mosaically!!! This was the program we ended up using in the end because we decided it had the best quality and the best looking mosaic. This program took a while, like 10 or more minutes. In the end this mosaic was the best and we are very happy we took the risk trying out Mosaically again. Later in our next blog post we will talk about how our bake sale went and we will talk about how we put up our mural. We will probably make like two more blog post after this one. Our murl process is almost done and we hope you enjoyed reading along!
The president from parent forum isn’t getting to school until 3 o’clock today so we didn’t get to ask her for a donation quite yet. So then we decided we would talk to Angela and she told us that parent forum reached their limit for donations that they could give and that we could not talk to Carol about PIP sponsoring us with the printing because she is in Belize.
Bella’s mom had talked to us earlier about our plan and she was just about to leave the school parking lot. We sprinted outside to catch her and told her that our original plan had failed. She told us about a mom at Polaris who is really into fundraising and give us her phone number. We went back inside to our work space to call PIP printing and Kathleen the fundraising mom. We called PIP and Amy the lady that we talked to last time was in an appointment and they sent us to her voicemail. We are hoping she calls us back today! While on the phone with Kathleen she gave us some very intricate ideas about fundraising. She told us that Polaris has a deal with Dino's Donuts and Great Alaska Pizza Co. and we could call them to set us up with deals. She also told us that she scored two pink elephant car washes and we can raffle them during the elementary half- day tomorrow while all the parents are at Polaris picking us their kids and after school. Good news: Heidi and yearbook offered to pay 100 dollars to help us purchase our mural! YAY! Again we remind and recommend you not to have a fee towards your mural because it sucks. UPDATE: A lot happened at lunch. Since Mindi was absent from school today we talked to Heidi about our access to the Polaris website. She give us great advice about making our own website and creating a link on the Polaris website to our site. We started making our website right away. Also we talked to Carrie the substitute principal about fundraising. She told us that we couldn’t sell pizza during lunch because it is a health code violation but that it would be totally ok to have a bake sale tomorrow at lunch along with the car wash raffle. We decided we would sell a ticket for the car wash raffle for 1 dollar and the bake sale is still deciding. Just now, we finally found a good program, plugged the pictures in and then came out a wonderful looking mosaic. After trying out about five different programs we finally found the best program for what we wanted our mural to look like. To our surprise we ended up back with Mosaically! We were going to stick with Photo Mosaic.com but then we just checked out Mosaically just for kicks and then it ended up being the best option. We also tried another program called Zumyn. This program was a little confusing so we ditched it for Mosaically. We are happy with the progress we made today and hopefully by tonight we will have sent PIP our file and it will be printed and placed on the wall by Monday. We will check in with you more tomorrow! So UPDATE after two days of waiting for Mosaically to load we decided not to go for with that program and to find a new one. In result of this we found the program called Picture Mosaics. We are hoping that we can use this program to create our mural. While this program is working we are figuring out how to pay for the printing of the mural. It is currently about $400, we recommend that when you create a mural that you create a fee free mural. This is a huge hassle and we are very stressed about how we are getting the money.
We are hoping that once we get the money we can easily print our mural and put it on the wall. This is a huge learning experience for us. We are very stressed about how we are going to make this work, but we have already learned so much about how to manage time, get money and create a digital mural! We are going to create a summery like paragraph that we can say to parent forum, Carol our principal and the printing company. We want them to sponsor us so that we do not have to pay the $442.81 for the printing process. If this does not work we are go to jump to extreme measures and involve the parents of Polaris K-12 to help us fundraise the money. We will inform you how this goes in our next blog post. For now we are going to talk to parent forum! Wish us luck goodbye. Today is Wednesday May 10th. It was necessary that we work from home today to meet with Becca’s mom, Jen Aist. She is helping us research how to create our mural with special technology. With her, we are testing out different programs and different softwares that we can create our photo mosaic with. Our mural is going to be called the Faces of Polaris which is going to demonstrate that everyone in the Polaris community makes up Polaris K-12 school as a whole. Everyone's yearbook photo is going to create a bigger picture, the outside of Polaris like a photo mosaic.
The original idea was to print all the yearbook photos and do it all by hand. We would print the photos out, cut the photos out, sort them out, glue them onto the wall, and tinted the faces with a highlighter to match the photo of Polaris. While you're reading this, you're probably asking yourself how do they think this is going to work? Well to answer your question it’s not. We realized this well on a quick excursion to Costco, where we almost made the mistake of going through with this plan. We thought our plan was going to be great until we had a very informative talk with the photo operator at Costco. This talk made us realize how unrealistic our plan was. With him we started to construct our new and better plan. Now, here we are in Becca’s house attempting to use a program called Mosaically. Our sample has been loading for the past hour and a half. We are currently crossing our fingers that this works! Earlier today, Jen helped us out by calling a printing company called PIP (Poster Printing). They gave us some good information on how much it will cost to print our mural with the dimensions that we need. They even offered to come to Polaris and help us stick it to the wall. That was the good news, but it will actually be very expensive. We decided since it was only around four hundred dollars, it would be our intensive fee. We would split the cost between our families. Hopefully this works out, check in soon! Bye Today is the first day of our mural intensive. We have finished all the requirements to create a mural at Polaris K-12 and now we are experimenting on how we will make our mural. Below we will show the steps you must take to finish the standard requirements to start working on your mural. This took us approximately two weeks to finish. We were in school during this so we had conflicting homework assignments and classes. We advise that you start this process in the beginning of the year instead of the end of the year like we did. This will provide you with more flexibility and time to work on your mural. For step one, finish all requirements to begin creating your mural The first requirement you have to complete is to create a calendar displaying your plan on how you're going to create your mural. You can create a planner or even put dates into a calendar on a tech device. For example: we, Bella and Becca printed out a calendar for the two months we would be working on this project. We then with our neatest handwriting and a pen devised an outline of our mural. Everyday we needed to complete something it would be on our calendar. This really helped us be more organized. The second step is to write a paragraph of explanation. This paragraph represents what your mural is, what does your mural mean. When writing this make sure you take into consideration spelling errors, punctuation and proper word choice. You want this paragraph to be spectacular! When you finish the paragraph of explanation print it off and put it somewhere safe until you present it to Op group and your principal.
Our paragraph of explanation: Isabella Kaczorowski Becca Aist April 17th, 2017 The Faces of Polaris Mural The Faces of Polaris Mural is going to reflect the unique, rare and phenomenal school that Polaris is today. The idea for the mural is that everybody's yearbook picture will make up a picture of the front of Polaris. In this photo everyone attending Polaris K-12 will be represented. This mural displays how everyone creates Polaris. Every person attending this school contributes to how it works. They have a say in their school community and chance to speak up for what they believe in. This mural will demonstrate this great environment. The third step is to make a colored stretch of your mural to show how you want it to look. Make sure it is very detailed and looks exactly how you want your mural to look like. Remember you will be presenting this to Op Group and they will want all your best work shown so they will understand the mural that you want to create. For step four you have to present all the work you just did to Op Group. When you present to Op Group make sure you give a clear idea on what your mural is and explain in detail. Show pictures of what your mural is going to look like, there is no need to read your proposal or display calendar. Try to make good persuasive speech to convince all the advisory’s to vote for your mural. After this you must ask Heidi to email the school community and let them know about your mural. Once you have done this, for step five display what your mural is on the space you're going to put your mural in. Set up a space where people can leave comments on your mural. Leave this up for at least a week. Once you get at least thirty comments from the school community look through them. If 80% of the comments are yes and positive towards your mural then you go back to Op Group and get a vote from the advisory’s on what they think. If the majority of advisories vote yes then you can start your mural! Step 6, congratulations! You have completed all the steps towards making your amazing mural. Get started and show the school what you have been telling them about and create a fabulous mural. Below we will demonstrate our process of making our mural in blog posts. We hope this is a helpful blog post for you to create your own mural! Have fun :) |
